THIRD DATES

By Gladys Alvarez
Miami, Florida

Is it tradition that you cook a meal for a third date as it seems the third date consists of home cooked recipes? Perhaps by the third date you are beginning to be more comfortable and relaxed with one another and a meal at home is a way to see how you fare with each other alone, and not with the public distractions.

Regardless of the reason, cooking dinner for two should not be a traumatic event, nor should you stress about what to cook. Don’t worry so much about the recipes you are going to use until you figure out what the main course is going to be. Don’t make the most common mistake that people make when cooking for a date for the first time which is trying to impress. Because cooking recipes outside your culinary skills will only lead to one thing and that is disaster.

Before you decide on a recipe or write out your evening menu you need to find out the persons food likes, dislikes, and especially food allergies. Allergies are not to be taken lightly so you want to make sure you have a list of your dates allergies if he/she has any. Another thing to inquire about is to whether or not they eat meat. Nowadays more and more people are turning to a healthier lifestyle which means limiting or excluding meat from their diets. The last thing you want to do is serve a vegetarian a big slab of meat on your third date. You may not see a fourth if you do. Some people like fish but will not eat shellfish. It is these things you must learn about your date before you plan your meal. You can even ask them what their favorite recipe is.

When you cook for someone for the first time don’t experiment with new recipes. Cook something you are familiar with, something that you have cooked many times before with great results. If it’s not the most flashy dish, that’s okay. A little food presentation goes a long way. So even if you are serving a one dish casserole, pretty it up a bit with some garnish, a swirl of sauce on the side and you will impress him/her with your culinary skills.

Chances are, the food will not be the focal point of the evening anyway. On a third date you are still getting to know each other, so even if the food you cook is fantastic, it will be only secondary to you.
